Royal International Air Tattoo 2024
Taking Flight on Sustainability: PEEQUAL at the Royal International Air Tattoo 2024

THE FULL STORY
THE STORY SNAPSHOT
- Event: Royal International Air Tattoo 2024 (RIAT 2024)
- Location & year: RAF Fairford; 2024
- Audience size / footfall: 150,000 visitors
PEEQUAL units installed:
- 24 units
Key outcomes:
- Demonstrated effective use in diverse, hard-standing settings (a runway).
- Introduced PEEQUAL to a new exhibition/spectator audience outside the typical festival demographic.
- Supported client’s sustainability goals by requiring no water, power, or chemicals.
- Reduced logistics emissions per lorry load compared to portable toilets.
THE PROBLEM:
The event organisers, which included an ambitious sustainability manager, needed a sanitation solution that aligned with the Air Tattoo’s sustainability messaging across the massive event site. This included reducing waste, cutting onsite fleet emissions, and finding waterless alternatives. Additionally, the sheer scale of the event required a solution that was logistically efficient to distribute across the vast, hard-standing runway area.

WHY PEEQUAL?
- Values alignment: Because PEEQUAL requires no water, power, or chemicals, we aligned closely with the sustainability goals of the event
- Operational and environmental pressures: The units offer lower emissions per lorry load compared to standard portable toilets, supporting the Air Tattoo’s wider goal of reducing onsite fleet emissions.
- Product differentiation: The flat-pack nature and low-emissions logistics made PEEQUAL a practical and ethical choice for the massive site.
“We were delighted to secure Peequal for RIAT24 as their ethos fits perfectly with one of our objectives to ‘test boundaries and introduce innovative new products to RIAT facilities and across the showground’. We are looking forward to hearing the feedback from our customers and hope they liked the product as much as we did.”
Kate McKinley, People & Sustainability Director at RIAT
THE SOLUTION
- Number of units and configuration: 24 units
- Where they were placed and why: Units were placed at three distinct locations: near the family enclosure, the “blue customer entrance,” and the “Aviation Club.”
- How PEEQUAL integrated into the wider event infrastructure: The setup was on a closed-off runway, characterised as a “tarmac, semi-permanent infrastructure,” which housed an end-to-end aircraft exhibition.
- Logistics advantages: The units were easily distributed by telehandlers across the massive runway and offer lower emissions per lorry load versus portable toilets.

THE IMPACT & RESULTS
- Environmental impact: The design requires no water, power, or chemicals. The units also contribute to reduced logistics emissions per lorry load.
- Operational benefits: Successful deployment in a hard-standing setting (a runway). The units were easily distributed by telehandlers, demonstrating scalability and operational suitability for non-festival exhibition and spectator events.
- User experience: The deployment introduced the product to a new audience of aviation enthusiasts and families, proving PEEQUAL’s relevance beyond the traditional festival-goer. The PEEQUAL team found that a large number of people who had never used women’s urinals before gave the squat urinals a go and said they would use them again! There were also attendees who said they’d used PEEQUAL before and wanted to see our urinals at more events.
By entering such a different market, PEEQUAL are becoming a standard facility not only at festivals but at all events across the UK.
